Skiing in Zauchensee
Zauchensee offers excellent all round skiing and is especially renowned for its extensive off piste areas.
Once beginners feel ready to move on from the dedicated nursery slopes, there are wide open blue runs which wind though the trees, offering excellent variety. The long runs provide plenty of skiing before having to take a lift back up. The nursery slope is an ideal place to develop the basic skills and the moving carpets takes the strain out of having to climb back up the slope. The excellent ski school soon progresses any beginner off to a flying start – both children and adults will be tackling challenging runs by the end of the week.
The magnificent three peaks that beckon the skier upwards offer varied terrain. The Zauchensee lifts fan out either side of the valley offering long blue, reds and blacks. An eight-man Gondola opposite the Hotel Zauchenseehof whisks you up into the system and allows access to all the other lifts without having to walk anywhere. A day’s tour is easily accessible as you drop over the back and down into Flachauwinkl. The well-groomed pistes are long and serviced by fast-moving lifts.
Off-piste skiers will have fun on many trails and the moguled black runs will make the legs burn. Skiers can enjoy the women’s downhill course, but perhaps not at the speed the racers ski it!
Austrian ski schools are renowned as being some the best in the world and Ski Hillwood has no hesitation in recommending the Weltmeister Schischule Top Alpin, run by Peter Walchhofer. It is based in the Zauchenseehof, with its meeting point on the area outside the hotel’s ski room and just below one of Zauchensee’s main lifts so it could not be more convenient. The ski instructors are excellent and most can speak English. Group lessons can be booked either for children or adults and private lessons are also available, the ski school teach both skiing and snowboarding.
